The death of German bodybuilder and fitness influencer, Jo Lindner, known online as Joesthetics, at the tender age of 30 sent shockwaves throughout the fitness community.

His girlfriend, Nicha, who posted an Instagram message about Lindner’s untimely departure, revealed she had been suffering from a aneurysm which led to his death. He also explained that he had been suffering from neck pain just three days before his death. However, they weren’t aware of the seriousness of the situation until it was too late.

What is an aneurysm?

According to Dr Ravikanth, Senior Cardiologist, Kamineni Hospitals, Hyderabad, an aneurysm is a localized and abnormal dilation or swelling of a blood vessel wall. It occurs when the wall weakens and loses its elasticity, resulting in the formation of a bulge or sack-like structure. They can develop in various parts of the body, including the brain, aorta (the body’s main artery), and other blood vessels.

Aneurysms can result from various causes. This includes weakened blood vessel walls due to chronic conditions such as atherosclerosis, hypertension and some connective tissue disorders. Trauma, whether caused by physical injury or medical procedures, can also contribute to the development of the aneurysm. In rare cases, infections and inflammation within blood vessels can lead to weakening and subsequent formation of an aneurysm, said Dr. Ravikanth.

They often remain asymptomatic until rupture or substantial expansion. Symptoms vary in size, location, and rate of growth, including severe, unexplained headaches; discomfort in the affected regions (for example, chest, abdomen); dizziness; nausea; vision changes; speech difficulties; and weakness or numbness in the face, arms or legs, the expert added.

Is it fatal?

The severity of an aneurysm depends on its location, size, and whether it ruptures.

A ruptured aneurysm can lead to life-threatening internal bleeding, requiring immediate medical attention. If not treated promptly, a ruptured aneurysm can be fatal. However, not all aneurysms rupture, and smaller, stable aneurysms can be discovered incidentally during medical imaging tests without causing any harm, said Dr. Ravikanth.

As for the treatment, she said it depends on factors like the patient’s size, location, and health. Small, stable aneurysms can be monitored through imaging tests during their making lifestyle changes to control blood pressure and avoid risky activities. Large, rapidly growing, or symptomatic aneurysms may require intervention. Surgical repair involves removing or repairing the weakened section of blood vessel with synthetic grafts. Endovascular treatments such as coiling or stent placement use minimally invasive techniques to promote clotting and prevent rupture by inserting metal coils or stents into the aneurysm, the doctor concluded.
